At Catholic Charities’ Caritas Family Center, families in crisis find more than temporary shelter—they find hope and the first steps toward lasting stability.
The Family Center has the capacity to house up to 40 families at a time. Rooms can accommodate anywhere from two to eight family members, allowing us to provide safe space for families of all sizes. Families may stay for up to six months, giving them the time they need to regroup, rebuild, and begin the search for permanent housing.
“I just try to show them that they're in a safe place,” shared Marina Van Cleave, PA at the Family Center. “Throughout their stay they become more open and understand that we’re doing everything we can to keep them safe, comfortable, and supported.”
Beyond a roof and a bed, families receive nourishing meals—dinner every evening, and additional meals depending on the time of year. But the care goes much deeper. Through the Youth and Family Services department, children ages 5 to 18 receive personalized academic case management to help them succeed in school.
“That first interaction matters the most,” said Jazmin Moreno Arreola, Academic Specialist. “Even if clients are hesitant at first, providing support and resources right away lets them know we’re here to walk alongside them.”
To help families feel a sense of normalcy, the Family Center also hosts year-round events and activities that bring joy and connection. At our annual Back-to-School Bash, every school-age child receives a new backpack, volunteers provide fresh haircuts for the first day of school, and community partners ensure parents have the resources they need for a successful year. At Christmas, children enjoy a cookie-decorating contest, festive activities, gifts for every child, and even a visit from Santa. Families also gather for a springtime Easter egg hunt, complete with a visit from the Easter Bunny. During summer, winter, and spring breaks, kids can join in special activities that give them the same kinds of experiences as their peers.
The Family Center also provides afterschool enrichment, including tutoring, reading time, and classes from the Luther Burbank Performing Arts Center—ensuring children have both academic support and opportunities for creativity.
Parents benefit from childcare referrals, housing navigation, case management, and the community-building these activities provide. Together, these services ensure families aren’t just surviving, but moving forward with dignity, strength, and the confidence to build a brighter future.
Thanks to our community's generosity, the Caritas Family Center continues to be a lifeline for families across our region—helping them find not just stability, but belonging.
