The Comfort of a Call: How One Daily Check-In Makes All the Difference for Angela

When Angela answers the phone each morning, it’s more than just a greeting - it’s a lifeline.

At 98 years old, Angela lives independently in Sonoma County. She’s witty, thoughtful, and full of life. But like many older adults, she faces the quiet challenge of isolation.

“Each morning, when you live alone, a caring voice brings comfort,” she says. “You know you are not isolated. You can share your troubles and your joys.”

The Hidden Struggle of Aging Alone

Angela’s family stays close - her son and daughter-in-law visit nearly every week. But she’s intentional about giving them space.

“When you get older, as old as me, in a few weeks I’ll be 99, you don’t want to put too much stress on your family,” she says. “I try my best to be independent.”

Even with nearby loved ones, Angela understands the weight of living alone - and the comfort of knowing someone will check in.

“If you don’t answer, they get your family. They find out,” she explains. “That brings peace to my mind, because if something happens to me… through you (Catholic Charities), they will know.”

A Simple Service with a Profound Impact

That’s where Caring Voices, a Catholic Charities program, makes a difference. Five days a week, Angela receives a phone call from a volunteer. These calls offer more than a wellness check, they bring real companionship.

“They have been there for me with their Caring Voices,” Angela says. “I formed wonderful friends among the Caring Voices. We discuss good things and bad things, and always I can face the day with a positive attitude.”

Over time, the voices on the other end of the line have become an essential part of her routine, and her wellbeing.

“I could go on and on to tell you how much pleasure I get,” she says. “It’s wonderful to have people call you. You feel like you are not abandoned. You are not alone.”

The Power of Community

Angela still finds great joy in giving back, especially to her family. A native of Italy, she continues to pass on culinary traditions to her grandchildren.

“My grandson, every time he comes over, he wants pasta with pesto,” she laughs. “And he says, ‘Make enough, Nona, so I can take it home.’”

He is learning to cook from her, too. “Once a month, he comes with his girlfriend and I teach them. They’re beginning to be better than Nona!”

Despite her age, Angela stays active, independent, and rooted in community. And she’s clear about the role Catholic Charities plays in her life.

“Caring Voices is a big part of my life,” she says. “I think you are about the best association I know of.”

You Can Be the Voice Someone Is Waiting For

Angela’s story is one of resilience, love, and gratitude - but also of a real need shared by many seniors.

“If I were younger, I would definitely volunteer,” she says. “Some of these people that call, when I thank them, they say they get a lot of pleasure in doing what they’re doing.”

Every day, Caring Voices brings comfort, friendship, and safety to older adults like Angela. A five-minute call might not seem like much, but to someone living alone, it can mean everything.
